			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In 2011, the HB-LED industry is undergoing dramatic changes. After an astounding 108% market growth in 2010, driven largely by the adoption of LED backlights in LCD TVs, computer monitors, and notebook computers, the market is expected to grow at a much slower rate of 10% in 2011. Demand for LCD TVs has slowed, and the oversupply of LEDs caused by widespread capacity scale-up has put strong downward pressure on prices. Nevertheless, the HB-LED market is forecast to grow another 45% by 2014 to $16.2 billion, driven by recovery in the backlight market and by the continuing adoption of LED lighting. Helping conference participants to understand the dynamics of this rapidly changing and complex market is a key goal of SIL 2012.</p>
<p>The focus for SIL 2012 will continue to be on the developments in HB-LED applications, technology, and manufacturing that will drive the market forward over the next five years and beyond. For the fourth year in a row the conference will feature a parallel LEDs in Lighting Track, which will examine some of the most pressing issues regarding the adoption of LED lighting in a variety of applications. Also, SIL will continue the tradition of offering a full-day Solid-State Lighting Investor Forum on February 7, featuring presentations by a wide range of advanced technology startups.</p>
<p>New this year is a full parallel track on LED manufacturing, based on the success of the half-day workshop first offered at SIL 2011. As the HB-LED industry scales up to unprecedented levels of high-volume production, manufacturing issues are receiving increased attention. Both traditional LED equipment suppliers and suppliers from the silicon semiconductor industry are developing new equipment and techniques to move to larger substrate sizes, increase automation, and improve yield and throughput. The LED Manufacturing Track, sponsored by SEMI, will explore the most challenging manufacturing issues facing LED producers in the coming years.</p>
<p>The 2012 show will also include a comprehensive exhibit area with more than 150 companies participating. The exhibit area will feature the LED Light and Design Pavilion, which is designed to showcase a variety of LED lighting products, and which will offer a series of presentations and hands-on demonstrations on February 8 and 9 for members of the lighting community. Moreover, five in-depth workshops and two tutorials will be held on Wednesday, February 7, offering topics ranging from LED test and measurement to architectural lighting design.</p>
<p>The show will also provide insight into the rapidly developing markets for LED lighting, backlights for LCD TVs, outdoor signs and displays, and advanced automotive lighting applications, as well as other major trends in applications, industry structure, government policies, markets, products, and technologies that will affect the LED industry’s future. Featured speakers for the conference’s HB LED Market Track include: Ling Wu, General Secretary of the China Solid-State Lighting Alliance; Chung Hoon Lee, CEO of Seoul Semiconductor Co.; and Eric Kim, CEO of Soraa. In addition, Ella Shum, Director of the LED Research, Strategies Unlimited, will provide an annual update on the market for HB-LEDs, along with a five-year forecast.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Before we describe how it’s done, note that we recommend that the result be checked as having sufficient brightness for a stop &amp; tail-light application. That’s because the light output may be inadequate, depending on the tail-light lens and reflector assembly – so use any modified lamps with discretion! As shown, an additional diode (D1) and resistor (68W) provide power from the “tail” circuit. Alternatively, when the “stop” circuit is powered, the resistor is bypassed by D2, thus increasing the LED current and the light output.<br />
Modifications to the lamp assembly instructions are as follows:</p>
<p>1. After soldering in the copper tube but before soldering the platform board to the bayonet lamp base, the three components inside the dotted box must be wired up inside the base.<br />
2. The anode leads of the diodes can be soldered directly into the contacts (“bumps”) on the base (a fine file or glass paper may be needed to get a nice round shape). Everything must be insulated (use heatshrink tubing).</p>
<p>The red wire from the Multidisc board is then soldered to the junction of D2 and the resistor. The black wire is soldered directly the metal casing of the lamp. We suggest testing the lamp before soldering the platform board in place. It may be necessary to vary the value of the additional resistor to get the correct intensity change between stop &amp; tail modes.</p>

<div id="_mcePaste">However, LCD panel manufacturers have adjusted their targets for 2011 LCD TV panel shipments with LED backlights down from 53% to 47%. Key reasons for this change in outlook include the current sell-through climate, price erosion in premium LED models, making them less attractive, and a shift in strategy towards 3D panels. New LCD TV panel manufacturers are focusing on CCFL production to ensure stability in the business lines as they ramp up their Gen 6 and Gen 8 lines.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">“Despite some build-up of LED-backlit TV panel inventories in the second half of 2010, the industry has recognized that LED backlighting is an irreversible trend, with benefits such as lower power consumption and slim form factor,” noted David Hsieh, DisplaySearch Vice President and research leader for large-area panels. “As a result, LCD TV panel makers are continuously reducing LED backlight costs in order to increase shipments.”</div>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A new high-performance 150” diagonal LED video display developed by FormoLight Technologies, Inc., provides high brightness and high contrast with sharp, vivid images for indoor and outdoor applications thanks to an LED solution from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors that utilizes its compact Multi ChipLEDs.</p>
<p>The RGB Multi ChipLEDs used in the FormoLight display are the smallest RGB LEDs currently on the market. Their compact size permits a special image format in LED video displays ranging in size from small to large screens. In this display, for interior use, the LEDs are not used as backlighting light sources that are hidden from viewers such as in LCDs, but in this application the LEDs are clearly visible on the surface of the display. However, they remain undetected by viewers because the Multi ChipLEDs are extremely small (1.6 mm x 1.6 mm and 0.9 mm thick) and virtually invisible through the black LED housing.</p>
<p>&#8220;Information has to be presented clearly in every respect. This concerns not only the concept of visualization, but also the technical reproduction. Excellent image quality is needed, which is easier to realize thanks to the advantages of LEDs, such as their directional characteristics and light quality,&#8221; explains Sven Weber of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. &#8220;The black LED housing reflects almost no ambient light, thus ensuring a perfectly flawless image.&#8221; The FormoLight display utilizes OSRAM’s Multi ChipLED technology to deliver high brightness, rich colors, sharp contours and depth of field, displaying high-quality images with high contrast.</p>
<p><strong>Ultra-wide vision: Convincing from every angle </strong><br />
Multi ChipLEDs produce a homogenous image from virtually any viewing angle. This homogeneity is based on two principles. The LEDs can be packed very closely together because of their compact size – the distance between pixels can be as little as 2mm. Also, the special casting material ensures a perfect color mix. The LEDs contain three chips (red, green, blue) manufactured using OSRAM’s Thinfilm or ThinGaN technology, each of which can be controlled separately. The color impression is constant across the entire viewing angle and remains brilliant even when viewed from the side. Thanks to the LEDs’ sharp contrasts and high output, this high image quality is maintained even in high ambient light environments. The use of this technology is also worthwhile from an economic perspective, as LEDs are characterized by low power consumption and long life.</p>

Compared with small  incandescent bulbs and neon lamps, LED is characterized by low working  voltage and current, high reliability, long service time, easy  adjustment of brightness, etc.</p>
<p>The entry threshold has been  lowered gradually from upstream industry to downstream industry of the  LED industry chain. The upstream industry is single chip and its  epitaxy, the midstream industry is LED chip processing, and the  downstream industry is package test and application, among which  upstream and midstream industries are the fields with most fierce  international competition, highest business risks, rich technology  content and huge capital investment. In LED industry chain, the profit  of LED epitaxial chips and chips accounts for about 70% of the industry,  that of LED package accounts for about 10%-20%, and that of LED  application also accounts for about 10%-20%.</p>
<p>Under the circumstances of global energy crisis and increasing  requirement of environmental protection, energy-saving, safe, micro and  environmentally-friendly semiconductor LED lighting with long service  time and rich colors has been universally recognized as the principal  way for energy saving. Semiconductor lamps adopt LED as a new light  source, whose consumption is only 1/10 electricity of that of general  incandescent lamps and service time prolongs 100 times under the same  brightness. In 2010, the scale of global LED market exceeded USD 10  billion. It is predicted that the annual compound growth rate of global  LED market will be over 20% in 2011-2015.</p>
<p>Global LED industry mainly concentrates in Japan, Taiwan, Europe and  America, South Korea and Mainland China, among which Japan occupies 50%  shares and is the world&#8217;s largest producing country of the LED industry.</p>
<p>After 30-year development, the LED industry in China has initially  formed a relatively complete industry chain, covering all the links of  LED substrate, epitaxial chips, chip package and application. By the end  of 2010, there have been over 1,000 LED relevant enterprises in China.  These enterprises mainly concentrate in the downstream package and  application fields, whose development of extension and chip links  relatively lags behind.</p>
<p>Viewed from industry chain, the midstream and the upstream of the LED  industry are capital-intensive, namely in great demand of capitals.  Though many enterprises declared to invest in LED projects in 2010, many  enterprises only had the investment intention without real actions. In  China, upstream enterprises often have small scales, whose chip products  are in short supply, and the phenomenon of accumulation of package  customers&#8217; orders generally exists in these enterprises. Hence, in the  short term, the relation between production capability and market demand  is that supply exceeds demand in upstream epitaxial chip link rather  than overheating investment.</p>
<p>In midstream package link, influenced by high technology and  investment threshold at the present stage, degree of self-sufficiency of  middle and high-end packaged products (e.g. large-power device and  surface mount device) in China is low, while low-end packaged products  (e.g. in-line device) can basically meet the demand in domestic  application fields without overheating investment. In downstream  application link, different application fields show different  characteristics, and overheating investment phenomenon temporarily  exists in some fields. There are many enterprises producing application  products in the downstream industry of China&#8217;s LED industry, which  always face the problem of excess competition with constant capital  investment. It is predicted that vicious competition will occur in  2011-2012.</p>
<p>Though the overall LED industry in China does not possess advanced  technology and scale advantage of international manufacturers, it owns  the local service advantage. Huge LED application demand in China,  including airport, expressway construction and various governmental  projects, will bring LED enterprises especially midstream and downstream  enterprises great opportunities for development.</p>
<p>With the enhancement of luminous efficiency and application  technology, the LED applications have been transferred from the original  indicator lamp application to other fields with more development  potential such as display screen, landscape lighting, backlight,  automotive lamp, traffic lamp and lighting. LED application is showing a  diversified development trend.</p>
