What's New

In 2011, the HB-LED industry is undergoing dramatic changes. After an astounding 108% market growth in 2010, driven largely by the adoption of LED backlights in LCD TVs, computer monitors, and notebook computers, the market is expected to grow at a much slower rate of 10% in 2011. Demand for LCD TVs has slowed, and the oversupply of LEDs caused by widespread capacity scale-up has put strong downward pressure on prices. Nevertheless, the HB-LED market is forecast to grow another 45% by 2014 to $16.2 billion, driven by recovery in the backlight market and by the continuing adoption of LED lighting. Helping conference participants to understand the dynamics of this rapidly changing and complex market is a key goal of SIL 2012.

The focus for SIL 2012 will continue to be on the developments in HB-LED applications, technology, and manufacturing that will drive the market forward over the next five years and beyond. For the fourth year in a row the conference will feature a parallel LEDs in Lighting Track, which will examine some of the most pressing issues regarding the adoption of LED lighting in a variety of applications. Also, SIL will continue the tradition of offering a full-day Solid-State Lighting Investor Forum on February 7, featuring presentations by a wide range of advanced technology startups.

New this year is a full parallel track on LED manufacturing, based on the success of the half-day workshop first offered at SIL 2011. As the HB-LED industry scales up to unprecedented levels of high-volume production, manufacturing issues are receiving increased attention. Both traditional LED equipment suppliers and suppliers from the silicon semiconductor industry are developing new equipment and techniques to move to larger substrate sizes, increase automation, and improve yield and throughput. The LED Manufacturing Track, sponsored by SEMI, will explore the most challenging manufacturing issues facing LED producers in the coming years.

The 2012 show will also include a comprehensive exhibit area with more than 150 companies participating. The exhibit area will feature the LED Light and Design Pavilion, which is designed to showcase a variety of LED lighting products, and which will offer a series of presentations and hands-on demonstrations on February 8 and 9 for members of the lighting community. Moreover, five in-depth workshops and two tutorials will be held on Wednesday, February 7, offering topics ranging from LED test and measurement to architectural lighting design.

The show will also provide insight into the rapidly developing markets for LED lighting, backlights for LCD TVs, outdoor signs and displays, and advanced automotive lighting applications, as well as other major trends in applications, industry structure, government policies, markets, products, and technologies that will affect the LED industry’s future. Featured speakers for the conference’s HB LED Market Track include: Ling Wu, General Secretary of the China Solid-State Lighting Alliance; Chung Hoon Lee, CEO of Seoul Semiconductor Co.; and Eric Kim, CEO of Soraa. Global shipments of LCD TV panels with LED backlights reached 16.4 million units in Q1’11, a slight decrease from 16.6 million units in Q4’10. According to the DisplaySearch Quarterly Large-Area TFT LCD Shipment – Advanced LED Report, LED penetration in LCD TV panels reached 33% in Q1’11, a healthy growth from 29% in Q4’10.
However, LCD panel manufacturers have adjusted their targets for 2011 LCD TV panel shipments with LED backlights down from 53% to 47%. Key reasons for this change in outlook include the current sell-through climate, price erosion in premium LED models, making them less attractive, and a shift in strategy towards 3D panels. New LCD TV panel manufacturers are focusing on CCFL production to ensure stability in the business lines as they ramp up their Gen 6 and Gen 8 lines.
“Despite some build-up of LED-backlit TV panel inventories in the second half of 2010, the industry has recognized that LED backlighting is an irreversible trend, with benefits such as lower power consumption and slim form factor,” noted David Hsieh, DisplaySearch Vice President and research leader for large-area panels. “As a result, LCD TV panel makers are continuously reducing LED backlight costs in order to increase shipments.”
Hsieh added, “As we previously indicated, although the growing awareness of LEDs among consumers has encouraged panel makers to increase LED performance and continuously reduce costs, the growth in LED backlighting does not mean that CCFL will no longer be in demand. There are still many consumers and emerging markets that are very price sensitive.”
LG Display continued its leadership in LED-backlit LCD TV panel shipments in Q1’11, shipping more than 4 million units for a 27% share. Samsung closely followed with 24%, and Sharp and AUO each had 18%. Nearly all LCD TV panel makers are focusing on edge-type LED backlights, with the exception of Sharp and LG Display, who are also producing direct type backlights.
In terms of LED backlight LCD TV panel revenue, Samsung led with 30%, followed by LG Display with 27%.
Penetration of LED backlights in LCD TV panels is highest in 50” and larger screen sizes. In Q1’11, LED backlight penetration was 86% in 50-54” LCD TV panels, 82% in 55-59”, and 83% in 60”+. In the 46-47” segment, LED backlight penetration was 54%, and in the 40-42” and 32” segments, penetration was 41% and 18% respectively.

A new high-performance 150” diagonal LED video display developed by FormoLight Technologies, Inc., provides high brightness and high contrast with sharp, vivid images for indoor and outdoor applications thanks to an LED solution from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors that utilizes its compact Multi ChipLEDs.

The RGB Multi ChipLEDs used in the FormoLight display are the smallest RGB LEDs currently on the market. Their compact size permits a special image format in LED video displays ranging in size from small to large screens. In this display, for interior use, the LEDs are not used as backlighting light sources that are hidden from viewers such as in LCDs, but in this application the LEDs are clearly visible on the surface of the display. However, they remain undetected by viewers because the Multi ChipLEDs are extremely small (1.6 mm x 1.6 mm and 0.9 mm thick) and virtually invisible through the black LED housing.

“Information has to be presented clearly in every respect. This concerns not only the concept of visualization, but also the technical reproduction. Excellent image quality is needed, which is easier to realize thanks to the advantages of LEDs, such as their directional characteristics and light quality,” explains Sven Weber of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. “The black LED housing reflects almost no ambient light, thus ensuring a perfectly flawless image.” The FormoLight display utilizes OSRAM’s Multi ChipLED technology to deliver high brightness, rich colors, sharp contours and depth of field, displaying high-quality images with high contrast.

Ultra-wide vision: Convincing from every angle
Multi ChipLEDs produce a homogenous image from virtually any viewing angle. This homogeneity is based on two principles. The LEDs can be packed very closely together because of their compact size – the distance between pixels can be as little as 2mm. Also, the special casting material ensures a perfect color mix. The LEDs contain three chips (red, green, blue) manufactured using OSRAM’s Thinfilm or ThinGaN technology, each of which can be controlled separately. The color impression is constant across the entire viewing angle and remains brilliant even when viewed from the side. Thanks to the LEDs’ sharp contrasts and high output, this high image quality is maintained even in high ambient light environments. The use of this technology is also worthwhile from an economic perspective, as LEDs are characterized by low power consumption and long life.

One that is with LED display screen is applied constantly to realistic life, the people’s living standard is improving constantly too, led illumination came into common people’s home gradually too. It was led display screen of 2006 that developed fast, and then got LED by 2010 and lighted and attacked the whole world with LED liquid crystal rapidly first, have promoted the development of whole LED industry in the summit of main road especially! Proper but LED reveals the technical innovation day by day, LED expicity standard system and corresponding content should be updated, increased and improved, could adapt to the new change. Photoelectric Co., Ltd., Dior of Shenzhen, takes a stand: ” Though the standard system on led display screen has already had certain foundations, will shoulder heavy responsiblities for canonicalization of the whole industry, so we should be unremitting, strengthen and pay attention to canonial research, formulation, declare passing through and execution work hard, could meet LED and reveal the actual need that the industry develops continuously. ”
Basically enterprise’s independent development is formative under the environment of market for China led display screen industry, LED reveals the industry is a relative trade abundant in competition, the great of marketization degree, so, in the market competition, widen application respect, should say it is quite successful. However, the great of marketization degree will cause the excessive price competition inevitably, so, reveal in LED the atmosphere of advocating a kind of benign cycle development in the industry seems very important and urgent.
Dior thinks: ” At present, the display screen producer is under relatively riper prerequisite of the control technique of the full-color display screen, enterprises should strengthen the appearance design of the products and technological requirement to the related producer. The advanced products should be made into masterpieces, strengthen the input which press-casts the container body mould, guarantee the precision installed, contend with the foreign manufacturer products. The products of low-end of China should be simplified and designed on the premise of meeting the basic function, lower costs, form the batch, strengthen the export of the products. ”
The intersection of China and market competition and market standardize situation to be discrepancy at present, show as practical to look for the truth customer often and competitor to stop at nothing for reach purpose, this influences grade and quality problem of the products directly virtually. Among other trades such as the shoes-making trade, some enterprises have gone to and made real shoes from making false shoes, but some is still making false shoes. Hope led large screen curtain trade to so, think better normal prospect even at present. In the international market, relatively norms of market of developed country such as America and Europe, etc., basically compete according to the capability.

LED, a kind of semiconductor diode, can transfer electrical energy to optical energy, and emit yellow, green, blue and other visible light as well as infrared and ultraviolet invisible light. Compared with small incandescent bulbs and neon lamps, LED is characterized by low working voltage and current, high reliability, long service time, easy adjustment of brightness, etc.

The entry threshold has been lowered gradually from upstream industry to downstream industry of the LED industry chain. The upstream industry is single chip and its epitaxy, the midstream industry is LED chip processing, and the downstream industry is package test and application, among which upstream and midstream industries are the fields with most fierce international competition, highest business risks, rich technology content and huge capital investment. In LED industry chain, the profit of LED epitaxial chips and chips accounts for about 70% of the industry, that of LED package accounts for about 10%-20%, and that of LED application also accounts for about 10%-20%.

Under the circumstances of global energy crisis and increasing requirement of environmental protection, energy-saving, safe, micro and environmentally-friendly semiconductor LED lighting with long service time and rich colors has been universally recognized as the principal way for energy saving. Semiconductor lamps adopt LED as a new light source, whose consumption is only 1/10 electricity of that of general incandescent lamps and service time prolongs 100 times under the same brightness. In 2010, the scale of global LED market exceeded USD 10 billion. It is predicted that the annual compound growth rate of global LED market will be over 20% in 2011-2015.

Global LED industry mainly concentrates in Japan, Taiwan, Europe and America, South Korea and Mainland China, among which Japan occupies 50% shares and is the world’s largest producing country of the LED industry.

After 30-year development, the LED industry in China has initially formed a relatively complete industry chain, covering all the links of LED substrate, epitaxial chips, chip package and application. By the end of 2010, there have been over 1,000 LED relevant enterprises in China. These enterprises mainly concentrate in the downstream package and application fields, whose development of extension and chip links relatively lags behind.

Viewed from industry chain, the midstream and the upstream of the LED industry are capital-intensive, namely in great demand of capitals. Though many enterprises declared to invest in LED projects in 2010, many enterprises only had the investment intention without real actions. In China, upstream enterprises often have small scales, whose chip products are in short supply, and the phenomenon of accumulation of package customers’ orders generally exists in these enterprises. Hence, in the short term, the relation between production capability and market demand is that supply exceeds demand in upstream epitaxial chip link rather than overheating investment.

In midstream package link, influenced by high technology and investment threshold at the present stage, degree of self-sufficiency of middle and high-end packaged products (e.g. large-power device and surface mount device) in China is low, while low-end packaged products (e.g. in-line device) can basically meet the demand in domestic application fields without overheating investment. In downstream application link, different application fields show different characteristics, and overheating investment phenomenon temporarily exists in some fields. There are many enterprises producing application products in the downstream industry of China’s LED industry, which always face the problem of excess competition with constant capital investment. It is predicted that vicious competition will occur in 2011-2012.

Though the overall LED industry in China does not possess advanced technology and scale advantage of international manufacturers, it owns the local service advantage. Huge LED application demand in China, including airport, expressway construction and various governmental projects, will bring LED enterprises especially midstream and downstream enterprises great opportunities for development.

With the enhancement of luminous efficiency and application technology, the LED applications have been transferred from the original indicator lamp application to other fields with more development potential such as display screen, landscape lighting, backlight, automotive lamp, traffic lamp and lighting. LED application is showing a diversified development trend.

Suppliers of LED panels in China are enhancing selections to take advantage of rising demand amid growing adoption in the lighting, display and backlighting sectors. They are boosting the development of high-brightness and full-color variants, which are anticipated to gain steam in the years ahead.
Makers will integrate SMD diodes instead of DIP in upcoming models to improve intensity, stability and reliability. Using the LED type will also widen the viewing angle, reduce the size of the finished product and extend the average MTBF by five years or longer.
Companies are aiming for a pixel pitch smaller than the current 4mm, with some pushing for 3mm, to achieve better images and more vivid colors, especially in RGB units. Inhibitive costs, however, continue to limit the last to upscale portable electronics, including mobile phones and digital cameras. Elevated power consumption is also a contributing factor. As such, manufacturers are lowering both attributes to expand reach in the backlighting market. At present, white variants are the mainstream choice, a trend that is expected to hold in the next five years.
R&D efforts will maximize available technologies such as AlGaInP, TS AlGaAs and InGaN LEDs. The diodes can deliver red, yellow, green and blue colors and have a luminous efficacy of 100 lm/W or higher. These can be sourced locally, including from foreign players based in the country.
Makers will likewise continue providing customization services, which remain a key product development endeavor. For most, it accounts for half of business, with potential for future expansion as buyer requirements keep evolving. At Shenzhen So-Decision Technology Co. Ltd, the current 20 percent share may rise this year.
Large operations, in particular, are active in the pursuit of breakthroughs and securing IPRs for them. Jiangsu Wenrun Optoelectronic Co. Ltd, for example, holds about 30 technology patents, employing them in national and provincial projects to guarantee recognition at home and abroad. A major local supplier of LEDs and related products, it has served in four provincial R&D institutions. These are the Provincial Program Center, Provincial Engineering & Technology Center, Provincial Enterprise Technology Center and Provincial Science & Technology Public Service Center. The company likewise cooperates with universities such as the Huazhong University of Science and Technology to develop new products.
Overall, makers are building core competence to strengthen China’s position in the industry. The country’s LED panel sector will continue expanding amid recovering demand. The rate of increase in value is 25 percent since late 2009 after slowing to 10 to 15 percent earlier that year due to the financial crisis. Manufacturers forecast the trend will persist in one or two more years. China is projected to account for 40 percentof the world’s total LED panel volume by end-2011, according to QingDao News.
The category’s climbing share in the local LED display industry is driving production. At present, panels represent 30 percent of overall revenue. Lighting and display remain the component’s two major applications, covering indoor and outdoor advertising, decoration and residential illumination. These are expected to keep raising panel demand by more than 20 or even 30 percent this year and in 2012.
Suppliers are also looking to benefit from increasing adoption in the backlighting sector, thanks to the trend for environmental protection and energy conservation. Compared with dominant CCFL rivals, LED panels have a lower profile and power consumption, higher brightness and more vivid color. As a result, these are broadly adopted in the notebook and desktop PC, portable DVD player, small- and medium-screen TV, GPS and industrial segments.
Globally, the category’s share in the backlighting application is in an upturn. From 3 percent in 2009, it jumped to 10 percent the following year, according to DisplaySearch. The estimated worldwide shipments of LED-backlit TVs surpassed 20 million units in 2010, and are anticipated to exceed 50 million by 2012. In large panels for notebook PCs, penetration is expected to reach 90 percent during the same period based on statistics from iSuppli, with deliveries reaching 17.4 million units.
In addition, makers are leveraging interest in locally made LED panels generated by extensive use in recent world events held in China to boost international standing. These included the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai and the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, Guangdong province. The 2011 World Universiade to be held in Guangdong’s Shenzhen will be another showcase occasion.
Suppliers also continue to capitalize on opportunities presented by the economic downturn. They credit it for encouraging overseas buyers to source the component from China, which in turn is spurring domestic R&D to ensure high quality and performance, and enhance service delivery.
At present, more than 80 percent of makers ship their products abroad, with volume ranging from 20 to 80 percent of output. Others, including locally based foreign operations, allocate their entire yield for international trade.
The majority of these exporters are confident global demand will continue to surge, with annual increases exceeding 25 percent until 2015. They believe the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics will draw attention to the line further.
Demand from Europe and the US has gradually recovered since late 2009, while requirements from emerging markets such as South Asia rose significantly last year. Shanghai Xingang Semiconductor Device Fty said shipments to its new destination, Turkey, have been increasing by more than 25 percent annually. The maker, which exports 50 percent of products, anticipates overseas business to keep improving, especially for LED panels for backlighting. It is extending reach to South Asia and the Middle East in the future.

But it was the LED light display created by EPIC Production Technology that won the Lights on Broadway lighting design competition Friday.

The Lights on Broadway festival attracted about 30,000 people over a warm weekend last September with a lighting design competition in which three firms from across North America each lit up a block along Broadway. Thousands of people sporting blinking blue stars and candles strolled the boulevards that Saturday, voting on the light display they liked best.

The Lights on Broadway committee jury considered the technical and environmental details of each proposal, and determined EPIC’s concept features the best overall lighting design.

EPIC’s light-emitting-diode technology allowed the colour of the lights to be programmed to change at a moment’s notice at no additional cost, permitting a dynamic celebration of events such as Canada Day — with red and white lights. The jury also appreciated that the design could be implemented without any attachments to the trees — the best choice for the ongoing health of Broadway’s signature elms.

EPIC will be asked to create a final design to light up Broadway permanently, year round.

The Downtown BIZ and the Lights on Broadway committee members will launch a capital campaign spearheaded by Ida Albo to raise the required capital upon approval of the final lighting design.

“We truly feel that it will be a marquee for the city of Winnipeg and the province of Manitoba,” says Gary Sywake, EPIC project manager. “With so many landmarks being established, we know we can make this truly our own for generations to enhance and feel proud of the downtown. We look forward to entering into a partnership with the Downtown BIZ and creating a world-class design that the citizens of Winnipeg will be proud of.”

Lights on Broadway is sponsored by Manitoba Hydro, Manitoba Homecoming 2010, the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ and the Hotel Fort Garry.
